The
town, little more than
a ruin, is situated on
right side of Lanzhou---Xinjiang
highway, 85km north of
the county seat of Anxi,
by side of the Sule River.
It was built in year 10
of Yongzheng reign (1732)
in the Qing Dynasty as
a military fortress. In
the first year of Tongzhi
reign of the Qing Dynasty
there was a rebellion
of the Hui nationality
that people in the town
all fled from chaos caused
by the war and the town
was empty.
The ruined town is 320m
from east to west and
122m from south to north.
The remained wall is 5—8m.
There are still ruins
of corner watchtowers
and houses. Two ancient
diversiform- leaved poplar
trees are growing south
of the town. Tourists
may have a break on the
way from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan,
visiting the ancient town
while sampling watermelon.
There is also a museum
by highway near the ancient
town, displayed are specimens
of wild animals and plants,
dried-up corpse as well
as 80 relics. Among them
, the reproduced ivory
Buddha and the drum mounted
with man-skin, the bowl
made of man’s head and
a walking stick with caver
patterns of eight gods
are particularly attractive.
