was built in July, 1987,
invested by Japanese,
designed and built by
Chinese as a studio for
shooting the film “Dunhuang”.
Since the story of “Dunhuang”
happened in the Song Dynasty,
everything there was modeled
after the Song Dynasty’s,
and thus it has other
names of “the Old Dunhuang
Town of Song” and “the
Old Sazhou Town of Song”.
The local people just
call it “Dunhuang Film
Town “or “Old Dunhuang
Town”.
It is broad in scale covering
an area of 100.000 square
meters, and floor space
of 12.000 square meters.
City wall was built with
sun-dried mud bricks.
It has three gates separately
facing east, west and
south. The east gate was
entirely modeled on the
original east gate of
old Dunhuang town. The
arch of the west gate
stands 18m in height.
The two towers on two
gates stand far apart
facing each other. There
are five blocks in the
town representing five
towns in Northern Song
Dynasty. Each of them
has its own features mirroring
the conditions and customs
of a place at that time
